Kyaka II refugee settlement, Kampala, Uganda
September 2021 – September 2024
Project partners: Chance for Childhood, African Women and Youth Action for Development (AWYAD) and Embrace Kulture (EK)
Project background
The Ensuring Quality Access to Education for All (EQUAL) project was a three-year Inclusive Education programme implemented by Chance for Childhood (CfC), African Women and Youth Action for Development (AWYAD) and Embrace Kulture (EK) between 2021 – 2024. It was funded by the Vitol Foundation.
The project was implemented with the aim of bridging the inclusion gaps in the education sector for children in the Kyaka II refugee settlement in western Uganda. More specifically, the project aimed to enrol girls and out-of-school children from households facing extreme economic vulnerabilities, and those who had previously dropped out of school due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, with Uganda having the longest school closures/lockdown of two years.
Project achievements
3,104 marginalised learners enrolled in school
1,412 girls, children with disabilities and/or special educational needs, and children from households experiencing extreme economic vulnerabilities reported feeling more included in daily life.
1,223 children reported feeling safer in the classroom
252 teachers provided with in-person or online training, or trained by trained teachers
120 families supported to establish Village Savings and Loan Associations (VLSA) groups. Groups were trained on different VSLA concepts including record keeping, savings culture and business management
150 community officials were shown to possess increased knowledge of inclusion and inclusive attitudes
