From institutions to inclusion: new film shows how we’re giving children with disabilities brighter futures 

In a new film, Chance for Childhood show how we're supporting children with disabilities in Rwanda who are re-joining the community after spending time in institutions.

Following the closure of many of Rwanda’s orphanages in recent years, children have been returning to their families and communities. Yet many of the children that have returned, especially those with disabilities, can struggle to readjust to family life without proper support. 

That’s where our family strengthening project comes in. As experts in disability inclusion, we were asked to identify children with disabilities that had been reunited with their families or were back living in communities. 

Working with our partners UNCIEF Rwanda, the National Council for Persons with Disabilities and the National Child Development Agency, we are supporting these children to return to life in the community, and creating safe, inclusive spaces for them to grow, learn and thrive. 

In a new film about the project, our Programme Manager Elie Kwizerimana and Parent Liaison Officer Adrien Habiyaremye speak about the family-centred approach we take to give children with disabilities the best chance in life:
