Meet the team: Joseph Munyandamutsa

With a Master’s degree in child development and a degree in physiotherapy, Project Coordinator Joseph is an expert in disability and working with communities to create meaningful change. He sees firsthand the positive effect your support has on the children we work with.

Tell us about the projects you are working on.

I coordinate projects promoting inclusive education in the DRC and Rwanda. Education: The Right for Every Child, provides inclusive education services to conflict-affected children in Goma, DRC. The LIFT project (Learning and Inclusion for Transformation) aims to increase access to education through screening, assessment and provision of assistive devices to children with disabilities in Rwanda.

What do you love most about your job?

I love the direct impact my job has on the lives of children with disabilities and their families. Being able to work closely with them, understand their needs, and provide a solution that genuinely improves the independence or quality of life of the child is incredibly rewarding. Every intervention brings a new story: a child learning to move, being able to communicate more effectively, or a caregiver feeling supported.

Are there any children you have helped whose stories stand out for you?

Working closely with families and children means I get to witness so many powerful moments. I remember one child who couldn’t sleep, and was always crying, day and night. His frustrated parents couldn’t do anything but seek traditional healers because they were told their child was poisoned. This child was never diagnosed, but he had a developmental delay and was heavily affected by his parents’ traditional understanding and beliefs about disability. I’ll never forget the look on his mother’s face when, after attending parent group interventions, the child started moving around the compound and sleeping at night. The family could sleep! When I met them after the intervention, it was an emotional moment that always comes up in my mind.

Let me try to be a messenger for the people on the ground: your donation is not just giving; it is a life-changing act for many families who need your support.

We see the impact of every single intervention among the families whose lives you have touched. Thank you for being part of this journey with us”

What do you want the world to know about children with disabilities?

Children with disabilities are just like any other children, full of potential, dreams, and the ability to thrive when given the right support at the appropriate time.

Children’s disabilities do not define them; it’s often the lack of supporting services and negative attitudes in society that hold them back, and it is the role and responsibility of everyone to remove such barriers for a better inclusive society.
